Ghalenoei's views on Iran vs. South Korea and Esteghlal

footballmedia.net - Afshin Dastafshan: The following interview with the head coach of Iran national team was conducted by Iranews this week, below is a translation of the interview:

Amir Ghalenoei has been working more closely with Esteghlal FC recently and has been attending Esteghlal practice sessions to directly monitoring Esteghlal players reports the club’s official web site. Ghalenoei’s involvement in Esteghlal appears to be more substantial now than any time since his appointment as Team Melli head coach.

Iranews – Mr Ghalenoei, let us talk about Esteghlal’s situation.

Ghalenoei – I would rather not talk about Esteghlal as that would not be in Esteghlal’s interest, I would like the club to get on with its work without distractions.

Iranews – You have been attending Esteghlal practice sessions recently, is this not an indication of your increased involvement with the club?

Ghalenoei – I never left Esteghlal to want to return, no matter where I am, any part of the world, I will always be an Esteghlal man and will be side by side with the club. I will always do what I can to help Esteghlal.

Iranews – What about Team Melli, what’s the latest on the team’s condition?

Ghalenoei – I am not sure what you mean by ‘the latest’, we are just starting!

Iranews – What’s the current status of Team Melli; what are your team plans for the forthcoming match against South Korea (U-23)?

Ghalenoei – We will be playing an attacking game, you can expect Team Melli to play a different system from previous matches. I might opt for 4-3-3- or 4-4-2 and change to 4-2-4 when attacking.

Iranews – So we will see a convincing win for Iran?

Ghalenoei – It is our natural right to look for a convincing valuable win over South Korea (U-23)

Iranews – Will you be using any new players not used before from the Persian Gulf League (PGL)?

Ghalenoei – No not in this match, all European based and three UAE based players have been called up for this match, but I have a few players in mind to add to the team at a later point, we are monitoring them in the mean time. They will first be tested in the B Team and then moved to the first team. (GN gave no names)

Iranews – Do you follow the league? What’s your view of PGL?

Ghalenoei – In my opinion the quality of the league is below expectation, I would say we are getting a 10% return for the investment in our football. Sadly UAE league harms PGL since our top players move to UAE for better pay, this has left PGL without any superstars. All of Iran’s top strikers are playing in UAE league; our players’ forms suffer as a consequence since the UAE league is a weaker league than PGL. With our top strikers in UAE it’s meant Ali Daei who is nearly 38 has become PGL’s top scorer.

Iranews – I won’t name any names but would you like to add anything else to this topic?

Ghalenoei – Our football is very innocent, why should Esteghlal be using Azadi’s number two practice pitch for their training? Why doesn’t anyone look into Esteghlal’s difficulties? How can we expect Esteghlal to do well in the Asian Champions League? Now there is rumour that Gounesh will be appointed as Esteghlal head coach. Rather than spending a lot of money hiring a foreign coach the authorities should spend the money on improving facilities for the club, you will then see the current young Esteghlal coaches doing as well as Gounesh could.

Iranews – Last question; how do you see Esteghlal’s long term progress?

Ghalenoei – Hopefully Esteghlal will overcome their difficulties and meet the fan’s expectations.
